Commissions

A piece made
for one wall

A commission usually starts with a conversation about a room, a light, and a size. From there I send a small study for approval before any large canvas is started.

01

How it works

Typically 8–12 weeks

01

The conversation

Tell me about the room, where the light comes from, and roughly what size you have in mind. Photographs of the wall help more than anything.

02

A study

I make a small oil study and send you a photograph of it. Nothing larger starts until you are happy with it. There is no charge if you decide not to go ahead at this point.

03

The painting

The full piece is made over six to ten weeks. You get progress photographs at two or three points, but no obligation to comment on them.

04

Delivery

Signed, crated and couriered, or hand-delivered and hung if you are within a couple of hours of the studio.

The straightforward version

A commission costs roughly what a piece of the same size costs in the catalogue. Half is paid when the study is approved, half before delivery.

I don't copy an existing painting exactly — each one is made once, and a second attempt is never as good as the first. What I will do is work in the same register: same palette, same weather, same feeling, a different picture.

If the finished piece isn't right, you are not obliged to take it. That has happened twice, and both paintings sold to somebody else within the year.

No obligation, and no charge until a study is approved.
